How Electricity Bills are Calculated

Pakistan's electricity billing is governed by NEPRA (National Electric Power Regulatory Authority). All DISCOs (LESCO, KESC/KE, IESCO, MEPCO, FESCO, HESCO, PESCO, QESCO, GEPCO, SEPCO) use the same national domestic tariff. **The 300-unit cliff:** This is the most important feature of Pakistan's domestic tariff: - **≤300 units:** Cumulative slab billing. Each band is charged at its own rate. More affordable. - **>300 units:** Flat rate on ALL units at the higher slab rate. Your first 50 units are no longer cheap. If you're at 295 units, staying below 300 saves a significant amount every month. **Bill Components:** 1. **Energy Charges:** Units × per-unit rate (slab based) 2. **Fixed Charges:** Monthly amount based on your consumption slab 3. **Finance Cost Surcharge:** ~4.3% on energy + fixed charges 4. **Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA):** Variable monthly charge based on actual fuel cost 5. **TV License Fee:** Rs 35/month 6. **Meter Rent:** Rs 30/month 7. **GST 17%:** On the entire pre-GST total **How to reduce your bill:** - Target staying under 300 units (install inverter AC, LED bulbs) - Solar net-metering: sell excess power back to the grid - Use heavy appliances (washing machine, dishwasher) in early morning off-peak hours - Regular AC maintenance improves efficiency by 10-15%
