How to Calculate Zakat in Pakistan
Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam — an obligatory annual charity paid by Muslims who possess wealth above the nisab threshold. **Nisab (Minimum Threshold):** There are two methods for determining nisab: - **Silver Nisab (Hanafi — Recommended):** Based on 612.36 grams of silver. In 2024, approximately Rs 171,000. More people reach this threshold, benefiting more recipients. - **Gold Nisab:** Based on 87.48 grams of gold. In 2024, approximately Rs 1.92 million. A much higher threshold. **What is zakatable?** - Cash and bank balances - Gold and silver (jewelry is zakatable in Hanafi fiqh) - Business inventory and trade assets (at current market value) - Money owed to you (receivables/loans given) - Agricultural produce, livestock (calculated separately) **What is not zakatable?** - Personal use items (home, car, clothes, furniture) - Fixed business assets (machinery, buildings) - Debts you owe (deducted from total wealth) **Calculation:** 1. Sum all zakatable assets 2. Subtract debts/liabilities 3. If net wealth ≥ nisab AND held for one lunar year (hawl): Zakat = 2.5% **Hawl (One Lunar Year):** The wealth must have been above nisab for a complete lunar year. If it dips below nisab at any point during the year, the hawl resets.
